| Background: The Barclay Apartments is part of Swelgroup Properties (www.swelgroup.com). The company buys old buildings in the Wilshire and Hollywood areas, restores them and rents out apartments in them. The Barclay was built to be a luxury apartment complex in the 1920s. The reception area is very ornate and the architecture of the rest of the building is very classy as well. Apartment: I am living in a 500 square foot studio with wooden flooring. For $770 (including utilities) it's not a bad deal at all. The wood was redone recently and so was the bathroom. Everything works in the kitchen. I had to call maintenance once in the beginning because one of the stoves was not working. They were prompt with the service and everything works well now. Location: Wilshire Center is a great location. The area is being promoted as a pedestrian environment so you can walk everywhere. Ralphs is about four blocks from where I am. You should go to www.wilshirecenter.com to learn more about the area. Security / Location: The apartment is right by Korea Town, one block off Wilshire. If you come in from Wilshire, the area is really nice. The Radisson is right here so are a few other hotels. There are a few other apartment complexes which look quite nice. There is nightlife in the area so there are always people around. I feel very comfortable walking on the streets. Of course, once you turn into Korea Town - which is a block the other way, the area is shabbier. But I have never felt unsafe in the area. There are lots of familes with kids walking around. I have been here only a month, but so far I have not experience or seen any incident. I checked the crime index for the area when I was miving in and it was something like 3.3 when LA's average was 3.6. So it's safer than average LA. Parking: There is no building parking. There is ample of street parking but it is impossible to find a park. There is a parking structure across the street where everyone parks. It's $65 a month. I have walked through the structure several times and it feels safe. Besides monthly parking, the structure has cheap guest parking as well. So if you have guests over, they should be able to find parking there. And if you leave after midnight but before 7 in the morning, the parking is free. Public Transport: The apartment is two blocks from the Metro Red Line. I work in downtown and I take the subway everyday. It takes me six minutes to get to work. Not bad for LA, aye? Besides the Red Line, there is easy access to buses. The 720 Rapid bus goes all the way to Museum Mile, Rodeo Drive, UCLA and Santa Monica beach. Good frequency and rapid service. Go to www.mta.net for further information. I don't have a car and I use public transport to go everywhere. So far, I have not had any problems. Management: The management is really nice. Everyone's been really sweet to me. But I have been here only a month, if I have any negative experience, I will post another message. Noise level: I am on the fifth (top) floor. It's not a noisy neighborhood at all, but if someone honks, I can hear it. There is no school or fire station closeby so there is no reason for noise. The whole street is a long row of apartments. Cons: The only problem I have had so far is that it was really hot when I moved in. You cannot install ACs in the window (it doesn't look good from outside so the management does not allow it). I have not had the time to explore alternative. Besides, temperatures have dropped now and It's quite nice. Make sure you check with the management about how hot it gets over summer and whether there are viable solutions to the problem. I just don't know. |
