1. Brookridge Apartments
614 Peninsula Drive
Newport News  VA, 23605
13.0
Recent Review:First off, I am a relatively new and current tenant, so I cannot provide a review in context prior to 2003.BUILDINGS AND GROUNDSThe first things you notice about Brookridge are neatness and uniformity of the buildings and grounds. Most units are made up of clustered duplexes, either single- or two-story.Several steps lead up to sheltered front and back entrances, with a communal back yard. There are decorative shutters on windows. The buildings have chimneys, but not fireplaces. There are morning cleanup crews, and yard or landscape maintenance crews. Their work makes a difference. There is plenty of parking.APARTMENT TYPESMost are multifamily clusters:2 fam: single-story or two-story duplexes5 fam : two (or more) two-story duplexes with a single-story unit at the end.Single family units:Some highly-sought after units are stand-alone (people usually stay in these when they become available!).MAINTENANCE:There is a 24-hour phone number to call after regular business hours. My own experience with repair calls has been positive, with a call being answered in a timely fashion depending on severity.Examples of issues:insulation needed around pipes, clogged drain, refrigerator needed replacing. Brookridge supplies and replaces central air/heating filters.SAFETY:Residents reflect the reality that is our community, and our tenants are a crossection. From what I have seen myself, the Brookridge staff is working hard to improve the selection of new tenants and lessen the retention of problem tenants. Personally I have never felt unsafe here. I find that most people speak and acknowledge each other.OFFICE STAFF:The best way to describe my dealings with the office management and staff is to say that I am never hesitant to call or drop by, and have never put off talking to anyone there. I can't say that about all of the places where I have been a tenant in the past. The Brookridge staff are consistently professional, friendly, and get things done. And they work with you if you run into a problem.NOISE:Brookridge has a clause in the lease regarding noise, but how do you monitor and enforce cars cruising (or parked with loud music when the weather gets better)? Let's face it:there are some tenants who like their music loud all the time, but most tenants who do like their music loud cut it down between 9-11 pm.Some clusters and areas are quieter than others, and the staff works hard to find a placement to suit your preferences.CONSTRUCTION:Wood floors or carpet, new windows. One thing that irks me is the fact that front and back doors have no screen doors - a serious problem in the warm weather especially! I vote that we get screen doors!Windows and doors are drafty and could use more weatherstripping. That will help improve the cost of electrical consumption for central heating - which tenants pay for.Walls and ceilings are a uniform color and brightens the interior. These buildings are older and some of the electrical outlets could use an upgrade. Not all outlets have grounded (3-prong) access so you need the gray 2-to-3 converter plugs.Regarding crawly things, I can not stand them in my house, and am happy to say that the apartment has no cucaracha infestation. There is the occasional bug, spider or fly.
2. Chelsea At Lee Hall
626 Chelsea Place
Newport News  VA, 23603

Recent Review:Tucked away off of a quite country road, close to two surrounding military instillations, Chelsea at Lee Hall is an ideal place to live, especially for military families. The quality of living makes the complex more of a neightborhoood than a complex. The staff have upbeat attitudes, which reflects in the management of the complex. The pool and fitness facility aren't very big but serve their purpose. There's even a book moblie that comes every week from the local library. The thing I liked best about living at Chelsea Place is that the staff makes sure that those who are looking to rent can afford to live there. The only drawback to living here is that if you enjoy riding a bike or running, you will have to watch out for cars since there are no sidewalks on the surrounding road. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a quite and quality of life neighborhood.
3. Featherstone Apartments

Recent Review:Our family has been here for 2 years and having great things to say about this place, The complex is clean, management is courteous and friendly. Work orders are filled promptly. The Kiln Creek comunity as a whole is a nice place to live. The only hting that O would improve on is having a better area for kids to play. People don't pick up after their dogs and the nice area by the lake is covered in dog poop. Overall, I would reccomend it.

Recent Review:These have been the worst apartments that I have ever lived in.The look like a happy community but the management is really bad.I have to beg them daily to come and do the necesarry repairs in my apartment. They'll only fix half the items when it is time to pay the rent.I have threatened to report them for slacking on the job.I have talked to people who have lived here for several years and still they have same problems from the day they moved in.I think that they discriminate because I noticed that they'll fix the apartments that they have the renters thatspeak english.People who speak spanish they'll just put them off.I am tired of this and if I need to take legal action to represent the other people that are not heard, I will. Also, its not very safe. There have been shootings, drug addicts that do drugs in front of other residents and kids and management won't do nothing.
6. Kingstowne Apartments
500 Oscar Loop

Recent Review:You really can't beat the location.5 min from the local Food Lion and liquor store.20 from Ft Eustis, 10 min from the mall 15 minutes from the Newport News/Williamsburg airport.5 min walking distance from several eating establishments including IHOP, Fazoli's, a small sushi restaurant.Far enough away from the mall district traffic but close enough to get there without a problem. The price is the best in town for what you get, and the neighborhood is fairly safe.However... the trash compactor is a 1/4 mile walk, or drive, inconvienent to have to throw your trash awaym however, it is on the main road out, so it's easy enough to take it out on your way out of the apartments.Furthermore, the steps on the Kingstowne II apts are treacherous in rain. And if someone is yelling at her boyfriend below you, (or doing other things loudly), you will hear it.Not clearly, but it's there. It all depends on your priorites and the money you have to spend.
7. Kopenhaven Apartments
Louise Drive
Newport News  VA, 23601

Recent Review:i lived at Kopenhaven apartment Feb 04-Feb 05.I must say that i enjoyed living there. The area is very secluded. It's very good location cause you are in the middle of everything only few minutes away fromMecury,Warwick,Jefferson and I-64 exit is 2 minutes away. There is Super Walmart down the road, numerous shopping centers. Its not a big apartment complex so that means less people less noise. I felt safe and had no problems with the office staff. The only problem was with the maintenance ...The reaction needs to be a little quicker. ...The maintenance is split working between Kopenhaven and Concord Lake. The rent was decent. There is no w/d in the apartments but there was suppose to get portable washers soonrestuarants. Overall i enjoyed it and i'm actually thinking about moving back b/c it was so quiet and not to many problems.
8. Regency Square
One Regency Square

Recent Review:AppearanceOlder apartment complex with brick exterior.Apartments are organized into suites of four units with a common entrace to each. Each suite has two downstairs and two upstairs apartments.Apartments are available with either hardwood or carpet.Inside each apartment there is plenty of space with two bedrooms and one bath in each unit. The appliances are all electric.Since there are no washer/dryer hookups, the facility has a laudry facility. It is located outside behind a swimming pool that is open about 3 months out of the year. The facility has no AC and closes down after dark.Mailboxes are located in the center of the complex.FunctionalityI had a few problems in the apartment with the plumbing and the refrigerator which were adequately addressed. When I moved in the second phone jack in the master bedroom was dead and several of the power outlets were so badly worn that the plugs would fall right out or no power at all was coming from them at all.My heating and air conditioning unit made a very loud rumbling noise when starting up that would quiet down a little after a while.I finally gave in and replaced the phone jack and some outlets myself.ParkingThere are no assigned spaces so it is pretty much first come first serve. To make matters worse several junk vehicles remain on property. The area is not well lit in one or two locations, but there are security guards around occassionally at least on the weekend.ManagementManager of the apartment is hard working and listens to concerns. She does her best, and honestly should be working a better apartment complex.Maintenance workers are available and generally do a satisfactory job when needed.Communication OptionsApartments are wired for cable TV and high speed internet from Cox.Phone service and DSL is available through either Verizon or Cavalier Telephone. The management does not permit satellite TV dishes.NuisancesI had some pest problems while living there.I saw a roach which led to repeated sprayings and roach bait usage every two to three months which took care of the problem.I also saw a mouse during the winter, and later I caught two mice in traps. There was also some confirmed marijuana usage and other questionable activity going on.Some of the security guards were overzealous and would bother honest hardworking people instead of sniffing out real troublemakers. There were also quite a few kids that would run around almost completely unsupervised. One kid circled the parking lot with a very loud motorbike that I seriously wanted to destroy when I was working nights.LocationCentralized location less than two miles off of I-64.There is plenty of shopping around. In less than a five mile radius there are two malls, three Walmarts, Costco, Sam's Club, Barnes and Nobles, Starbucks, etc.Plenty of entertainment was around with the exception of not many good night clubs.PriceRent was recently raised to $499 with an extra $20 if you want carpet.Water and sewer is included.Parking is free.Pros:Cheap, good location, good managementCons:Old units with much wear and tear, pests and other nuisances

Recent Review:When you tour the place it seems nice and the staff is very pleasant. The complex is racked with problems and the maintenance staff is nice, but incompetent. The first week we lived there, there was a fire on the 5th floor. No fire alarm went off. The fire department contained the fire within 12 minutes, but up on the 15th floor we had no idea there was a problem. Since then a new alarm system has been installed and we have had numerous false alarms- including one on a Sunday night at 11pm.When we moved in we notified the office that the bedroom window did not work and the dishwasher leaked. Three rent payments later and a firm discussion the maintenance staff finally began work on the two problems. The window still is not totally functional, but I have given up. We are moving in two months anyway. Also when we moved in the place was filthy. There is no pride in ownership at all. The previous tenant apparently did not clean well and the ownership did not either. We had to clean extensively and found a lot of dirt (if you live here dont look under the stove or washer and dryer YUCK).Apparently water does not go up more that 10 floors on its own, so there is a water pump that helps water get to the top 10 floors. The pump has gone out at least once a month since we lived here and once a week for the past two weeks. This means that you get a drizzle of water out of the tap and cannot flush the toilet and good luck taking a shower. The biggest rip off ever is the fact that in your high amount of rent for the crappily maintained dwelling there are no utilities included. We pay electricity, water, sewer and garbage and to top it off& The complex gets the bills and then divides them up and adds a charge for it. So your bills are about $4 more than if they came straight from the electric co. or wherever.

Recent Review:well i thought it was ok when we got here, way to far from work.....they will complain if you leave your garbage can out after dark, but wont say anything about your neighbors having their little gang members friends over all hours of the night.they stuck this navy housing right in the middle of the ghetto, if your looking for a place and you work in norfolk, i do not recommend it, 25 miles doesnt seem that long, but the tunnel traffic sucks.look into rpp housing before moving out here.and rose the apartment manager is a nasty bitch with a terrible attitude.
