Tempe , city (1990 pop. 141,865), Maricopa co., S Ariz., in the Salt River valley, a suburb of Phoenix; inc. 1894. It is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities; its population more than doubled between 1970 and 1990, and future growth is expected. Tempe is a health resort and an agricultural center, with lands irrigated by the Salt River project. The city is also the seat of Arizona State Univ., which has expanded rapidly to become a principal economic factor in Tempe's growth. The university's auditorium was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Tempe is home to a National Football League team, the Arizona Cardinals. Native American ruins are nearby. Across the Salt River is Papago State Park.
