Greensboro, city (1990 pop. 183,521), seat of Guilford co., N central N.C.; inc. 1829. The city has an important textile industry and foundries and is a financial, insurance, and distribution center for the region. Other manufactures include motor vehicle parts, electronic and telecommunications equipment, and food and beverages. Greensboro was settled in 1749. The nearby site of the Revolutionary War battle of Guilford Courthouse is a national military park. The first sit-in during the civil rights movement occurred at a Greensboro Woolworth lunch counter in 1960. Dolley Madison, O. Henry, and Edward R. Murrow were born in Greensboro. Among its educational institutions are the Univ. of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro College, Guilford College, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State Univ., and Bennett College.
